It’s funny you should mention Between the Loins Lions, but I always think of that show when I think of the NYPL lions even though I’ve probably only seen one episode, if that. Surely the level of PBS indoctrination in our culture is terrifying.

Oh, and I did not see the Mufasaness until you pointed it out. STOP BLOWING ME. (I forgot the “away” again.) I like that the NYPL might be trying to find innovative ways to conserve whatever it is that they want to conserve. (Ink and paint, most likely, because ink cartridge prices ain’t no joke, brother. Server space is dirt cheap these days though. Bandwidth is tricker; the difference in size between the old and the new logo is not significant, and it is a static file after all, but who knows what difference it makes for the network of such a high-profile site. Think of the traffic generated just by CERTAIN PEOPLE who bombard the website mercilessly. *COUGH COUGH GUILTY COUGH*) The design does look cleaner, but at the same time… not..? I think it would work better if the lines were crisper, because right now, they look slightly blurry to me. (This might be an image quality thing though. The logo they show on the homepage looks crisper, but the one they have on the catalog is just meep.) Actually, you know what it reminds me of? Those ink prints from, like, a hundred years ago, that you can find on a title page of a book, a publisher’s logo. So basically, the face of the NYPL looks like a publishing company from the beginning of the 20th century. BUT THAT’S JUST ME.

If it does happen, I would look forward to a new card design, something in black and white, with a touch of red — modern yet classic that hearkens back to our beloved burgundy card. The current red and blue card — which I don’t really mind — is a little too busy in terms of color and style.

Now that you mention it, it also reminds me of a lovely woodblock print, or something I carved into a potato stamp!  Totally not ragging on it ‘cause I think that’s awesome, it just… totally doesn’t make me think of library right now. :(

Good point, with the simplicity of the new logo, hopefully the new cards will be simpler as well; the red/blue/white/magenta/chartreuse/puce flustercuck was just that… a hot mess.  And maybe by the time they’re out, I’ll be used to the logo?  It only takes me like a year to get used to logo makeovers.

Lol, I actually read this before I saw your post (it’s a summary of the NYT article).  The NYPL press release is so vague and general it’s like trying to sell MLM or something.

I liked the old logo, I sort of like the new logo, but just how is the new logo more “user-friendly, accessible, dynamic, and relevant” than the old one? I’m afraid the NYPL is pulling shit out of its ass, which I guess makes sense, anatomically speaking. I hope, what with the dire economic crisis and the state of the library budget and all, the Library hasn’t actually paid anyone in legitimate currency for this doodle-doo.

Just your posts for easy edits… Mmm, yeah, this is what happens when you abandon a service for over a year and then come crawling back.

The new logo reminds me of a cartoon.  You know that PBS children’s show, Between the Lions?  That is the first thing I think of whenever I see the new logo.  Then, the Lion King.  Their buzz words “user-friendly, accessible, dynamic, and relevant,” their “providing [of] digital content,” and wanting to work well in all media are kind of clues into why they decided to change it: the new logo contains simpler, cleaner lines that ultimately, just uses less whatever, whether it be server space, ink, or paint.  HAVE I BLOWN YOUR MIND? (AWAY?)

I’m guessing there’s gonna be another Update-your-library-card blitz soon with the new logo on them.  Man, I’m trying to imagine this on the library cards and… it just doesn’t fit.  Does the new logo bring to mind the kind of long-standing, important institution that is the NYPL?  I can picture them on children’s library cards — which actually might be a good way to differentiate them, since they have that distinction anyway, even though the cards all look the same.  Oh no, imagine the flying giant library banners!  I have to stop.
